Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Ensemble was born from my desire to give the euphonium a space where it could speak with complete freedom — not tucked inside inner lines, not merely blending, but stepping forward as a fully expressive, narrative voice. I have always been drawn to the instrument’s rare combination of warmth, agility, and vocal lyricism. It’s a piece in three movements:

  1. Excited, and vigorous

  2. Languishing, rubato

  3. Vigorous

In this concerto, the euphonium becomes the storyteller. Its melodies unfold with the kind of phrasing and emotional nuance I associate with a human voice, while the wind ensemble surrounds it not as accompaniment, but as an active partner — sometimes supporting, sometimes challenging, sometimes blending into a single color. I wanted the ensemble to offer a full spectrum of interaction, from intimate conversation to broad, resonant sonorities that frame the soloist in different lights.
