A Journey At Sea is a grade 4 piece for concert band inspired by stories of swashbuckling adventure and beautiful ocean vistas. It begins with a serene chorale that speaks to the optimism and sense of anticipation that sets in before any epic journey. What follows is a testimate to the ups and downs of a sea journey: the brave beginnings, the unexpected doldrums of mid-quest stalls, and the anticipation of a successful journey’s end.

Grading Explanation

GRADE 4 denotes a limited range in all instruments, use of some syncopated rhythms featuring eighth notes, time signature changes without rhythmic modulation, and an easily identifiable form. Grade 4 is generally appropriate for an advanced middle school or average high school concert band. Where needed, there are instrument doublings for any unusual instrumentation
